In the back room at my Starbucks, we have a "Things We Need" list - for the person who's compiling our order from the company warehouse. And yes, some wag wrote that line from the Beatles at the top of the board... and then someone added the part about needing more plastic knives.
I found it hilarious.
And I think it kind of sums up my mood at the moment. I was complaining to my Mom about the state of politics lately - I think the one-two punch of Ferraro followed by Wright, while driven by immediate events, also reflects the buildup of tensions that have simply boiled over. The breakdown of civility at Daily Kos that led to the "Writer's Strike", the fears people have of the primary devolving into brickbats and insults, that can't be resolved until the convention, if ever... and the fear that, come November, we will lose by being (as always) fractious, undisciplined, unfocused.
I can't talk about politics at the moment. I just can't. If I did, I'd say something about Jeff Fecke's "white people's prejudice=bad, black people's prejudice=okay" post over at Shakesville, and how it speaks volumes about white guilt and the things we can't discuss when t comes to race. But I can't do it. The combination of love - and knives - would probably get me in all sorts of trouble (particularly because Jeff is clearly a good guy).
I'm going to spend a while writing about movies and music and, perhaps trivial stuff. This too shall pass. Feel free to leave any comment that you think fits the title. Just not about Obama or Clinton or Feraro or Wright... or other stuff about the primary. Let love rule. And just... keep the knives handy. Just in case. Can you spread love with a knife? Or just butter?
There's a great scene in one of the early West Wing seasons where Bartlet gives Charlie a knife made by Paul Revere. It is a Classic Moving Moment(TM). So perhaps you can, indeed, spread love with a knife. Though I'd never interpreted the scene that way before.
