I managed last week to avoid the worst of the summer heat - and most of the national news - but apparently politics waited until the temperatures dropped to resurface.
It's an indication to me of how brain dead and lackluster this campaign still remains that we're back to the President trotting out that "tax increases for people making over $250,000" line again. The chapter and verse of how silly this all is (I prefer "how is $249,000 in annual income middle class?" as my starting point... but whatever you prefer) really doesn't bear repeating. And either way, we're stuck with both this dismal campaign and the dismal choice that its either President Obama or President Romney, and I'm not thrilled about Obama either, but Romney's just... well, just no.
If this were a rational campaign, we might be able to have some sort of rational discussion of policies and plans, but it's not, and it's pointless, I see, to try and take this seriously. We're in a moment where politics is almost all emotion and belief systems: you can see it in the fervent - and oh so serious - discussions of Romney's "Bain experience" and questions from the left about his wealth and where it's stored; and you can see it in the unhinged - there's really no other way to describe it - cries of conservatives who talk about the President as a criminal, the destroyer of all that is good about America and possibly a murderer ("He's personally responsible for the death of Brian Terry" just made me shake my head). In practical terms, neither of these guys - and much of what's running for Congress, too, I'm figuring as well - will really help fix what ails our politics, our government, our economy. This is "who do you like" and winning for the sake of winning, and little more.
I'm not angry, and I've stopped looking for an argument, either with conservatives or "my own side". I'm kind of done discussing politics, at least for now. This stuff is embarrassing. It's embarrassing that this is all the national discourse we can seemt o come up with, it's embarrassing that we're accepting, right now, what passes for governing in Washington. Taking any of this seriously - seriously trying to decide if Romney should be President (no), seriously trying to create the lefty case to un-elect the President (for what, really?), seriously trying to discuss tax and spending policies - is a fool's errand. And my Momma didn't raise no fool.
So again with the taxes. Really... what else could one expect?
